DUX was the toy label name for the German firm, Markes & Co. The Company was founded in 1904 by Karl Markes in Lüdenscheid. From the 1930s, DUX production evolved into tin model car kits. Production changed over to plastic in the 1960s and toy production ceased altogether in 1981. After the War II, the company continued producing metal parts and also tooled up and started producing a line of metal toy cars. At the 1950 Nuremberg Toy Fair, Markes & Co. of Lüdenscheid introduced the first split window VW miniature as a construction kit.

The DUX sets included a VW Kombi, Pickup and Panel Van as part of different construction kits, which included also other VWs like the Beetle Sedan. It was up to the young mechanics choice if he would like to assemble a Pickup rather than a Panel Van. The different tops that were included into the kit fitted the single lower section to produce the variations. The tin pieces had cut out windows, door seam lines, raised door handles and engine air louvers. Metal headlights and front and rear bumpers finish off the details. Metal chassis stamped DUX and had a heavy duty key wound motor with rubber tires. Later kits used plastic parts instead of metal.
