DUX was the toy label name for the German firm, Markes & Co. The company was founded in 1904 by Karl Markes in Lüdenscheid. From the 1930s, DUX production evolved into tin model car kits. Production changed over to plastic in the 1960s and toy production ceased altogether in 1981. At the 1950 Nuremberg Toy Fair, Markes & Co. of Lüdenscheid introduced the first split window VW miniature as a construction kit.
The metal toy cars had the concept of a kit consisting of several parts and could be put together and taken apart again. The metal kit cars in the product line included, for an example, a 1950’s era Mercedes Benz or BMW and to the delights of the VW enthusiasts, a Volkswagen Sedan and also VW Busses were produced as well. DUX produced a VW with a tin body with cut out windows and good details of front and rear hood, door seams and rear oval window with air louvers. Metal chassis stamped DUX and had a key wound motor. Maroon color was the early release with no window insert as found with the red and metallic blue version. Some versions were fitted with white rubber tires.
