In the early WWII post war years, to conserve paper, German school children all had little blackboards and chalk-like markers to complete their math and handwriting assignments. The well-equipped student also had a cloth and a little aluminum tin with a screw on top that were called a schwammdose. Inside the schwammdose was a wet sponge to erase and clean the blackboard. These schwammdoses came with a variety of themes for boys and girls and had various lithograph designs with everything from clowns to cowboys on the lid. But, lucky for VW collectors, some of them came with a Vintage Volkswagen theme and kids enjoying their VW Beetle Cabrio's lithographed on the schwammdose lid. There are no markings on these three VW Cabrio schwammdoses. From comparing them to other spardoses of the same time period, especially the lithograph artwork, they were definitely produced in the late 1940s - early 1950s and the manufacturer was no doubt Karl Rohrseitz GmbH & Co located in Zirndorf, Germany.
Karl Rohrseitz GmbH & Co produced a colorful spinning top that had graphics of a Cabrio VW with children and a dog inside. The top is marked "Made in Western Germany" - approximately 20cm in diameter and 20cm high.
