In the latter part of 1938, Porsche produced the VW38 series that consisted of 34 cars with designations of VW38/01 through VW38/44 (nonconsecutive numbering with gaps). On June 17, 1939, Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring was presented with a VW38/37 KdF Wagen Cabrio at the Carinhall Hunting Lodge, his country residence in Brandenburg, Germany. The KdF Wagen Cabrio was painted with Göring’s favorite color of metallic blue-green (some other cars in Göring’s automobile collection were also painted the metallic blue-green as well). At the time of the presentation, VW38/37 was still wearing the temporary Porsche Stuttgart plates of IIIA-0427. It appears the presentation was quite an event with Dr. Ferdinand Porsche and Ferry Porsche present as well as Reichskommissar Robert Ley and other high-ranking military officers.

It would be nice to create such a model car representing the Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring’s VW38/37 KdF Wagen Cabrio especially with the metallic blue-green paint color. The German made Georg Kellermann CKO flip top toy car would be a perfect example to create such a VW38/37 KdF Wagen Cabrio. After a year search on the Internet, a couple of older beat up and in need of repair CKO German Alder flip top toy cars were found. The CKO flip top were disassembled, the old lithograph was removed and the bare metal parts were ready for primer painting. The painting of the body section was a two-step process as the inside would be a black color. The outside body would be an automotive grade metallic blue-green lacquer finish. The top section consisting of 2 tin parts would be painted black. All the parts then received a clear coat paint in preparation for decals. After the painting was completed, a custom decal set was created using the MS Visio Pro graphic program. The graphic images were then printed on a Xerox color laser printer with clear and white water transfer decal paper. The decals were then cutout and meticulously placed on the painted body and top parts. After drying, the parts were again clear paint coated to seal the decals in place. The original CKO driver figure was transformed into a German military staff driver. The pair CKO flip tops were then put back together and brought back to life as the Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring’s VW38/37 KdF Wagen Cabrio. Check out the amazing sequence of photos showing the start to finish process. Special thanks to Undis Kanepe and Rick Search for making this project become a reality!
