GELY GARAGE - HEBMÜLLER KAROSSERIEWERKE

From time to time, you can find these small metal toy garages on the online auctions. They are usually found put together but originally were sold in a small box that consisted of 6 sections. When the sections were assembled, it created a corrugated toy garage about 1/25th scale with windows and two opening doors. The manufacturer was Georg Levy who founded his toy company in 1920, Nuremberg, Germany and used the GELY insignia. The garage was produced from the 1940s through the 1960s.

In the meantime, the Joseph Hebmüller Söhne Karosseriewerke located in Wuppertal Barmen, Germany were building the Hebmüller Volkswagen Convertible back in 1949-50. So, I thought it would be a neat idea to create a vintage looking toy garage using the Hebmüller theme and one of the GELY garages.

I located a GELY garage that was well played with, had paint loss and rust here and there. Took it all apart, did some minor repair and paint stripped it. The garage was cleaned, paint primered and ready for a special paint scheme. In the meantime, a custom graphics decal set was created using the Hebmüller insignias from the 1940s era. The decal set, which was scaled for the garage size, was then printed on a laser printer using a water transfer decal sheet.

The base paint for the garage was a red for the roof, ivory for the outside and a light green for the insides. The garage floor was a grey and the bottom was also red. After the base paint was dried, a special technique of fogging black, brown and dark green paint was applied to give a weathered look. The water transfer decals were cut out, soaked and applied to the garage sections. At times, it was challenging to position the decals perfectly on the corrugated surfaces. After the decals were dry, all the sections of the garage were clear paint coated. Then a quick assembly of the sections completed this vintage looking corrugated Hebmüller Karosseriewerke garage. As you can see in the photo, that is the front view of a black Hebmüller VW Type 14A just leaving the garage after service.
