In 1950, Mr. Felix Plawner, from Nürnberg, Germany started his company Plasticum Spielwaren.

From its early start, the company focused on cheaper mass market articles. They produced plastic products like dolls, cars, figurines, toy guns, toy music instruments, etc. They cooperated with companies in other markets, like Starlux and Minialuxe in France. They even exchanged molds, which makes it quite difficult to determine the producer of individual toys. The first two versions of the Split Window Beetles however were solely produced by PLASTICUM.

The company ceased to exist in the late 1980’s.

Plastic body with cutout windows molded bumpers produced by the PLASTICUM company based in Nürnberg, Germany. VW hood emblem and 14 (7 - 7) air louvers under the split window.  There are 3 subversions; one with a clockwerk motor (V1), one without base plate and without motor (V5) and one with plastic base plate and without motor (V2 and V4). The door seams are indicated by a double folded line. This version V5 without motor and without base plate has its plastic wheels snapped unto the body with metal axles. This version is often mistaken for a VOSS Split Window VW; the VOSS split however is from a completely different mold. The easiest and fastest way to see the difference is at the archwheels. The Plasticum covers the wheels to a much larger extend than the VOSS split. The only visible mold mark is a long line under the roof section.
