In 1935, Dr. Ferdinand Porsche had built the first prototype V1 vehicle which was to become the KdF Wagen or Volkswagen Beetle as we know it today. There were two V1 prototypes built known as V1 A model and V1 B model. Both similar but with minor body changes.

Also in 1935, Erwin Komenda, a car-body designer working for Dr. Porsche, had commissioned some workers to build on behalf of Dr. Porsche, 2 different V1 models in 1:5 scale size (80 cm in length), using a wooden frame with metal skin. These scale models were meant for testing and display purposes. They each were a little different in shape, front hood, rear hood, cooling slots, quarter windows, etc. Both scale models were in 1936 photographed in the garden of the Porsche villa in Stuttgart (Germany), with a camera angle to simulate as if the models were a 1:1 full size vehicle.

None of the V1 scale models are known to exist today. The silhouette of the V1 prototype model was well noticeable in the future Volkswagen Sedan.
