BOCHMANN KdF WAGEN VW

Produced by Carl Bochmann of Dresden, whose ‘CABO, Fabrik feiner Spielwaren’, made O gauge train accessories, goods wagons and toy cars with the trademark ‘CABO’ between 1925 and 1941.

From 1941, they most probably did not produce toys until the end of the war. In 1945, while the Soviet Army occupied Dresden, the company resumed (?) toy production and was led by Willy Bochmann, the son of Carl.

Carl Bochmann was interned in a Soviet POW camp and never returned. Willy Bochmann was married to a daughter of the famous coachbuilder Gläser based in Dresden and was general manager of the Gläser factory. Willy possibly "temporarily" led the CABO factory after the war in anticipation of the return of his father.

Sometime in the late 1940’s the company became part of the DDR state-owned VEB Dresdner Blech- und Spielwarenfabrik; in 1956 the company was incorporated in the VEB Prefo, also in Dresden. Initially they produced train and tramway toys and accessories from moulds of the prewar Bochman production. Later they also produced the Lineol figurines.

The Volkswagen KdF Wagen body is stamped out of tin plate and has cut out windows and the body is painted. Door seam lines and the headlights, taillights, door handles are raised in the body stamping. Indentations for fifteen air louvers under the rear split window. Tin plate chassis with rubber tires and with or without a clockwerk motor. With or without front and rear tin bumpers.
