In 1950, Mr. Felix Plawner, from Nürnberg, Germany started his company Plasticum Spielwaren.

From its early start, the company focused on cheaper mass market articles. They produced plastic products like dolls, cars, figurines, toy guns, toy music instruments, etc. They cooperated with companies in other markets, like Starlux and Minialuxe in France. They even exchanged moulds, which makes it quite difficult to determine the producer of individual toys. The first two versions of the Split Window Beetles however were solely produced by PLASTICUM.

From 1950 to 1957 the company logo was a man in a circle, but the logo resembled the logo of another company too much and after a lost lawsuit Plasticum was forced to alter the logo. Hence the second logo you can see on the pictures.

The company ceased to exist in the late 1980’s.

Plastic body with cutout windows molded bumpers produced by the PLASTICUM company based in Nürnberg, Germany. VW hood emblem and 14 (7 - 7) air louvers under the split window.  There are 3 subversions; one with a clockwerk motor (v1), one without base plate and without motor (v4 and V5) and this one with plastic base plate and without motor (V2). The door seams are indicated by a double folded line. The plastic wheels attached to the plastic base plate with little plastic rods. The only visible mold mark is a long line under the roof section (on the inside).

FORMETA MAGNETISCHE ARTIKEL produced a German driving school instruction set. The set came in a wooden box that had a paper driving template, road signs and several vehicles. One of the versions of this box come with a yellow, red, blue or green PLASTICUM Split Window Volkswagen without motor but with baseplate. The plastic chassis had two small magnets glued to it allow the VW to remain stationary on the driving template.
