Karl Hellmann was owner of a food wholesaler company in the early 1920’s in Nürnberg, Germany. In 1923 he got the idea to pack sugar cubes in 2 portion packs with advertising on the paper. He was the very first in Germany to do so and it was a tremendous success. The company today still exists.

Here shown are 3 sugar packets, which were marketed by HELLMA ERNST.

The oldest one is from the confectionery and coffeeshop Döhrmann in the city centre of die Stadt des Volkswagen, Wolfsburg. It featured the Döhrmann advertising, but also the HELLMA name and the name of Heimbs Kaffee, which was a coffeebrand who delivered coffee to Döhrmann. The sugarpacket on the left was used at the Volkswagenfactory. The scale of each sugar packet is 32mm x 16mm.
